THE THREE L’s APPROACH

It is often said that riding horses is “simple” but it is not “easy.” Truer words have not been spoken! The horse is a “simple” creature in its needs. The horse wants consistency, leadership, fairness, clarity and kindness. The horse wants to “get along” with its human partner. Humans oftentimes ‘’over complicate” the communication process when interacting with horses, which leads to frustration and anxiety in both the horse and the human.

Humans can be effective leaders when in the saddle by applying the “Three L’s” approach when requesting movement or control from the horse. The “Three L’s are LOOK, LIFT and LEG.

When requesting a movement from the horse the human needs to LOOK in the direction they wish to go, and twist their shoulders in line with their eyes in order to create a pre-signal for the horse. “Where the eyes look, the body follows.” As the human “LOOKS” with their eyes, head and body in the direction they wish to go, they need to “LIFT” (not pull) the reins upward along the line of the horses shoulder and then point with their thumb (if riding in one hand) or pinkie finger (if riding in two hands) in the direction desired. As the human “LOOKS and LIFTS” to cue a direction, they need to apply the opposite LEG to the horse in a squeezing motion with their calf. Here is an example of the how to use the “Three L’s”: If the human wishes to go to the right, they look to the right with their eyes, head and shoulders, lift the right rein (if in two hands) or both reins (if in one hand) along the line of the shoulder and point to the right as the squeeze the horse, using the calf muscle in the LEFT leg in a “toe in/heel out” position. By looking, lifting and using the leg in this manner the human can firmly and fairly request a movement that is clearly understood by the horse. Like all aspects of horsemanship, the Look, Lift and Leg approach takes feel, timing and experience. Once the human understands and applies the “Three L’s” approach they will find a new level of clarity, confidence and fun when in the saddle!

“C.P.R” AND HORSES.

Did you know horses need C.P.R in order to be happy working with humans? It’s true!

In the partnership between horses and humans, C.P.R is crucial. It provides both parties with everything they need to be successful and enjoy the ride.

C.P.R stands for CLARITY, PATIENCE and RELEASE.

CLARITY starts in the mind of the Human who visualizes what the request to the horse will be, then clearly cues the horse through the proper use of their natural aids, providing the horse a clear picture of what is being requested. PATIENCE starts with the Human allowing the Horse time to process the request and then act upon it. Sometimes this takes a little while for the horse to figure out what the “right answer” is. Being patient allows the horse to own the right answer and gives him the confidence needed to continue to believe in the human’s leadership. RELEASE is basically the ceasing of the request. When the horse gives the human an honest attempt at compliance, the human needs to stop requesting and reward the horse with a mental break (rubbing on them works too) even if it is just a few moments. Releasing the request lets the horse know they got it right, which inspires them to continue to look for right answers in the future.

Using C.P.R takes feel, timing and experience. Here at Pine Ridge Dude Ranch we have some fantastic and fun ways for YOU to get the experiences needed to develop and enrich your feel and timing while enjoying the beauty of the Catskills and the company of fine horses through our Cowboy Horsemanship Series of learning opportunities!
