NEW HORSES

We recently purchased five (5) new horses for Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. These horses are in quarantine for a period of time to ensure their overall health and to protect the current herd. While in quarantine these horses are put through a program of conditioning and training in order to best prepare then for the job of being a Wrangler or Line Horse here at “The Ridge.” The program looks a bit like this:

ROUND PEN WORK: This is where we make a connection, establish leadership and condition the mind and body to the levels of performance we need at “The Ridge.”

GROUND WORK: This is where we take communication to new levels. Through refining communication through a variety of exercises that correlate to working under saddle we can establish the partnership and trust along with the physical condition needed to be successful at the “The Ridge.”

RIDING: This is where we introduce the new horses to the property/trail network at “The Ridge” and put them through their paces at the walk, trot and lope while dealing with the variety of terrain and wildlife we share with our Guests. This is where we finish conditioning and putting a bit of “handle” on the horses.

Be sure to come say “howdy” to the new horses on your next visit to Pine Ridge Dude Ranch. Give us a call at (845) 626-7345 or email us reservations@pineridgeduderanch.com and book your next “Old West” adventure!

PERCEPTION vs. REALITY

One of the biggest “struggles” we as Humans have is balancing perceptions and reality in order to ascertain the truth of a situation. We see this all the time when Humans interact with Horses. The Human perceives they are at a certain level of experience or skill. The Horse then illuminates the reality of the Human’s experience and skill. Sometimes this leads to magical moments for the Human and sometimes it leads to frustration for the Human. So, how should a Human honestly evaluate their skills in regards to Horses, especially “Ranch Horses” and their ability to communicate and independently pilot a horse? Ask specific questions and answer them honestly. Here are a few that we ask our Guests.

When did you ride last?
How many times have your ridden a horse in the last 30 days, 60 days, 90 days?
What kind of riding did you do? Lesson/Clinic? Guided Trail Ride? Cattle drive? Competition?
Where did you ride? Arena? Trail? Dude Ranch?
Did you walk, trot or lope?
Can you post and maintain your seat and communication? Can you lope and maintain your seat and communication?
Was the horse a well-seasoned “lesson horse” at a Lesson Barn or a “line horse” at a Trail Ride facility?
Depending on your answers, your level and experience should become very apparent to you. Remember that horseback riding is “simple” because the needs/wants of the horse are simple, but by no means is horseback riding “easy” because there needs to be clear communication, balance, focus, and leadership from the Human.
