WHAT IS GROUNDWORK? Groundwork is a series of exercises that help condition and train the horse in mind, body and focus. Groundwork establishes Leadership and Communication, Respect and Responsiveness. When training horses it is always best to start off with Groundwork. Why do Groundwork? The short answer is SAFETY! The more involved answer is that by using groundwork as a FIRST STEP in a training program the Human can help the Horse gain confidence in itself and in the Human’s LEADERSHIP as the Human works on their feel and timing. Through the use of focused groundwork exercises the Human can gain better control of the Horse’s body parts and the Horse’s mind which helps to get the Horse better prepared to work more effectively under saddle. Groundwork also allows for the safe introduction and training of new skills. It is MUCH easier to “advance and retreat” on the ground than it is under saddle. Safer too. Groundwork is perfect for every horse no matter what their level of training as it aids in keeping the lines of communication fresh and skills refined.
