PROBLEM SOLVING: Part 2

One of the more “challenging” aspects of working with horses is correcting undesirable behaviors. In Part 1 of “Problem Solving” we looked at some potential sources of behavior issues. In art 2 we will look at one of the “non-physical” sources for poor behavior/performance: A lack of training/understanding.

We, as humans, need to evaluate the skill/knowledge base of the horse. When we find “gaps in the foundation” we need to take a few steps back and repair those gaps. Often time these gaps are caused by the Human because they rushed through training or glossed over aspects of building a strong foundation. Ensuring that the horse truly knows the fundamental skills needed to be successful (and there are MANY needed skills that fall into this category) before progressing it forward is essential. Yes, sometimes building the foundation can seem “less than fun” but the time invested in making sure that the foundation is solid will pay off in better partnerships, better performance and better communication.

It is often said that Novice Riders want to work on Intermediate level skills, Intermediate Riders want to work on Advanced level skills and Advanced Riders want to develop Better Basics! Think about that for just a second. The better your Basics are, the better everything else gets and “problems” often fix themselves in the process!

Keep reading this series to learn more about Problem Solving. On your next visit to Pine Ridge Dude Ranch please join us for one of the many Horsemanship demonstrations and learn more about the Art of Horsemanship!
